HENRY PURCELL

Henry Purcell was born in 1659 in Westminster. His father was a famous member of the Chapel Royale. Henry had 3 brothers, and he was the oldest one. His dad died in 1664. (beer =D) Henry Purcell was taken into his uncles house.

There is a famous rumour saying that Purcell started composing at the age of 9, even if his earliest recognised work was "Ode for the ling's birthday" written in 1670. From a letter found, written by the Uncle of Henry Purcell (Thomas Purcell ALIAS Tom) we could be able to tell that the composition was written for the voice of John Gostling, with a range of two full octaves!!!

Purcell then devoted himself to composition of sacred music. He is considered as the first genuine English opera.
