Marcel Khalife comes from Leban. He was was born in 1950. He sings a writes music. He use to teach from 1970 to 1975 a the "Conservatoire" in Beirut. He made an Ensemble called the Al Mayadeen in 1976 and got very famous through out the world for song ssuch as Ummi, Jawaz al-safr. All these songs were mainly based on poems written by Mahmoud Darwish. In 1999 he received the Palestine award for music. He was also named the artist of the year in 2005 by the UNESCO. His son Bachar Khalife is also a very famour player.
In the ablum extract I have listened to, all the songs are very different, for instance the first one is very Spanish kind of style, only at the beginning and only the guitar. Alot of instruments are used in his pieces. Such as the Bouzouk Typical instrument from where he comes, you can see it on the pictures, looks like a guitar but with alot more strings, piano, used to create a nice and calm harmony between different instrument, he also uses drums to give some action to the music, to give some power. He also uses violin for fantasy and solos.
The style hes plays I would say is varied, but stays into the arabic context.
