Flavvy Flav by Laurant de Wilde - (Contemporary jazz musican)

General Thoughts
  • Instruments used-Keyboard (Fender Rhodes electric piano sound), double-bass, saxophone, trumpet with electronic effects.
  • Trumpet plays distorted, dissonant blasts.
  • Sax & piano often play a melody in unison.
  • After the intro. drums play a regular 4/4. Drummer uses rimshots and a lot of fills using cymbols.
  • Tempo is not too fast. Andante.
  • Melodies are often disjunct and use infamiliar patterns-don't do what you would expect.
  • Bass plays rising & falling 'riff'.
  • Acoustic instruments used but with electronics to alter their sound.
Structure
  1. Begins with electronic sounding drone with rising & falling dissonant sounds on top. Sound almost like harmonics.
  2. The drums enter played in a relaxed style playing an irregular beat until joined by the electric piano.
  3. 2 falling step-wise falling chords in the piano followed by a rising & falling bass riff using swing rhythm. Piano enters with another phrase followed by the bass riff. Trumpet has random, dissonant interjections.
  4. Unison sax & piano melody. In 2 short phrases with a pause in between and the bass riff. Is played twice.
  5. Bass solo fill, electronic ambient sounds & drum breaks.
  6. A repeat of 4 until the music fades.
